Berlin study: Successful tests of nasal vaccine against corona
The Virology Institute at Freie Universität Berlin has come to a positive conclusion in coronavirus vaccination research. A live attenuated vaccine was tested - for the nose.
Loss or change in the sense of taste and smell: many people talk about this during and after a corona infection. What is one of the first symptoms for most people remains with some even after they have recovered from the disease.
Researchers in Berlin have now achieved something new in the fight against Sars-Cov-2: They have conducted a study in which a nasal vaccine was successfully tested on hamsters. After two doses, the virus was no longer able to replicate in the body. The vaccine itself is a newly developed, attenuated live vaccine.
Weak point mouth, nose, throat
A nasal vaccine targets exactly where the coronavirus attacks first. This is because the high concentration of antibodies in the mucous membranes leads to local immunisation. This prevents Sars-Cov-2 from entering the body via the upper respiratory tract. According to those conducting the studies, this ensures better defence than a vaccine injected into the muscle. The risk of disease transmission is also lower as a result.
A clinical trial is currently being prepared in which the first test will be carried out on humans.
If this ends with promising results, it would be a complete success: the vaccine in the form of a nasal spray or drops would be inexpensive to produce, easier to store and transport and can also be administered by less medically trained personnel.
