3 stylish alternatives to black

Wool coats, down and leather jackets are usually available in classic but also slightly dull black. As a result, winter fashion’s often gloomy and boring. Here are three colours that are currently in vogue and provide a subtle but welcome change.

While the summer months make us long for bright, cheerful colours, this time of the year sees many of us wear dark outfits. Be it down jackets, woollen sweaters or winter boots, black’s everywhere. Sure, it’s an easy and classic choice that goes with everything. But it also makes your outfit look a bit boring and dull – and it doesn’t help lighten up this already dark time of year.

The good news? There are plenty of great alternatives to black, even in muted colours. Here are three of them:

Dark brown

Dark brown is one of the trendiest colours this autumn. Just in time for the cold season, it’s become a fashion favourite. Even sneakers look great in dark brown. Replacing a black item with a brown equivalent here and there will give your outfit more warmth and depth.

The warm brown creates a beautiful contrast to the one-dimensional black.

Bordeaux

At first glance, this rich red may seem like a bold choice and difficult to combine. But it’s not at all. It actually blends easily into your wardrobe and goes with almost all shades, from beige to blue to, well, black. And Bordeaux looks much more elegant and sophisticated than other boring old colours.

Navy blue

There was a time when combining blue and black was a no-no. Luckily, those times are no more. Put these two colours together skillfully and your good eye for fashion will show.
