Galaxus and digitec, now for widescreen

Until now, users visiting digitec or Galaxus from a high-resolution screen would be greeted by grey bars on either side. But that’s about to change. We’ve optimised our stores for high resolutions. Product images are now larger, and texts are easier to read.

Good news for all high-resolution screen users: from now on you’ll no longer see wide grey bars on our pages. Instead, our stores fill your entire screen. This allows us to display product images larger and in a 1:1 aspect ratio instead of 4:3. Also, our texts are now easier to read on high-resolution screens, as we’ve enlarged the font a bit.

Goodbye grey bars:

Welcome to our store without borders:

«Our community repeatedly criticised our stores for being difficult to read, especially on large 4k screens,» says Remo Vetere, who’s co-responsible for the changes as Senior Frontend Engineer. «On wide screens, digitec and Galaxus are now over 50 per cent larger.» On full HD screens, the online stores now take up your entire screen; only on 4k UHD screens, a white frame remains.

Overall, around two thirds of desktop users benefit from the new display: the font size already increases at a window width of 1600 pixels. But the growing number of mobile shoppers will also benefit from the changes: «As our stores are responsive, many changes also benefit mobile users – pages now load even faster on cell phones,» adds Remo’s colleague and Lead UX Designer Leonardo Hauschild. Websites are «responsive» when a particular site reacts to the end device. And with this new product photo aspect ratio, images are also displayed larger on phones and tablets.

Admittedly, there are still a few low-traffic pages, such as the overview of our branches, that aren’t yet available in widescreen. «In addition, there may be display errors on the remaining pages that we need to resolve,» Remo says. «We’ll definitely stay on the ball there, though!»

What do you think of our new widescreen view? Does the leftover white frame annoy you as a UHD user? Do you have any other wishes for our store interface? Join the discussion in the comments!
