Leica cameras, MIUI 14 and IP68: Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro unveiled
The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro give a foretaste of the new smartphones for 2023. Design and features are known after the launch in China. Worldwide, they will be available in the next few months.
The Xiaomi 13 Pro is larger than the Xiaomi 13. Further differences can be seen in the display, casing material, camera and battery. Both models have Leica cameras on board. This also applies to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the IP68 certification. This means that both smartphones can survive 30 minutes in 1.5 metres of water unscathed.
Different sizes and materials
The new design is also shared by both smartphones. The AMOLED display on the 13 Pro measures 6.73 inches and has a resolution of 3200 × 1440 pixels. The Xiaomi 13's is 6.36 inches and 2400 × 1080 pixels. The maximum refresh rate reaches 120 hertz on both. In terms of brightness, they reach a very bright 1200 nits and even 1900 nits at peak.

The back of the Xiaomi 13 Pro is made of ceramic. The Xiaomi 13 is very likely to use glass. The manufacturer did not provide any concrete information on this. Only about the blue version of the smartphones. Here, the back is made of a new material called "skin". Nano technology would ensure that it feels good, is soft and non-slip, but also robust.
The battery is made of glass.
In terms of battery, the 13 Pro comes with a capacity of 4820 mAh and charges via a 120-watt power adapter. The Xiaomi 13 can access 4500 mAh and uses a 67-watt power supply. Wirelessly, both smartphones charge at up to 50 watts.

The software on board is MIUI 14. Xiaomi does not reveal whether the user interface is based on Android 13, but anything else would be embarrassing. In addition to some visual tweaks, it is said to take up less memory and only have eight system apps that cannot be uninstalled.
Leica camera on board
For the camera system, Xiaomi continues its collaboration with Leica. The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro are also the first smartphones from this collaboration to be available worldwide. They adopt some elements of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which is only available in China.
This means, for example, that there are two styles to choose from for photos on the 13 and 13 Pro. Unlike the 12S Ultra, however, "Authentic" and "Vibrant" are now said to fully support the P3 colour space, capturing 25 per cent "more colour" and improving the display of greens and reds.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro uses the one-inch Sony IMX989 and a focal length of 23 millimetres for its main camera. The Xiaomi 13 also uses this, but can "only" fall back on a Sony IMX800 as its image sensor. With 54 megapixels, it even surpasses the Sony IMX989's resolution of 50 megapixels.
50 megapixels is also the resolution of the telephoto camera in both smartphones. It has a focal length of 75 millimetres and, according to Xiaomi, allows an optical zoom of 0.5x to 3.2x in combination with the other cameras. There is again a difference in the ultra-wide-angle camera: it has twelve megapixels on the Xiaomi 13 and 50 megapixels on the 13 Pro.
Still several months to wait
In China, the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro will each be released in four colour variants and four storage versions. There are eight gigabytes of RAM with 128 or 256 gigabytes of internal storage, or twelve gigabytes of RAM with 256 or 512 gigabytes of storage.

Which versions of these will be available in our country, and at what price, Xiaomi plans to announce in the "coming months". In the case of the Xiaomi 12, it took about two and a half months to unveil the global version a year ago. If that time frame remains, Mobile World Congress at the end of February would be a fitting event for the unveiling.
