I would like to use AVerMedia Game Capture HD II for live streaming from my camcorder (with HDMI output or Firewire) to my computer (USB). Does this work with the device?

No, with Game Capture HD II you can only record onto a hard disk connected to it(!).
To tap HDMI to the PC, you can use a USB or PCIe card from the AverMedia Live Gamer or DarkCrystal series, for example: AVerMedia Live Gamer Extreme LGX (PC, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Alternatively, you can use your Firewire. If you don't have a Firewire port on your PC, there are many Firewire PCIe cards on the market.
At Digitec, for example, you can find cards from the Delock brand: Delock 89153, PCI-E x1 to 2x 1394B + 1x 1394A
