Rules of thumb

Small toolbox for big decisions
For a long time, the natural sciences had a monopoly on "laws", "theorems" and "principles". Gravity, for example, thermodynamics, Ohm's law. But while Newton's theory of gravity can clearly explain why the ketchup drips out of the hamburger, it unfortunately does not explain why this always happens to us. Murphy's Law, on the other hand, does: "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". Murphy's Law is what we call an "unwritten law". It is not set out in any set of rules, cannot be scientifically proven - and yet it is true. Just like the Peter Principle, which explains why our superiors are idiots, or Parkinson's Law, which postulates that meetings always last as long as the time estimated for them.
