HBO confirms second season of "The Last of Us" - and Amazon plans "Tomb Raider"
News from the game adaptation front: HBO has ordered a second season for "The Last of Us". And: Amazon wants to follow suit with a "Tomb Raider" series in the same category and has already signed an author.
After just three episodes and an incredibly good critic rating of 97 per cent on Rottentomatoes, one thing is already certain: the TV series "The Last of Us" will be renewed for a second season. The American private broadcaster HBO announced this in a press release.
"I'm impressed, honoured and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie's journey," says Neil Druckmann, executive producer, author and co-director of the series and game director of the game. The cast, crew and executives at HBO have exceeded his already high expectations. The second season is set to build on the success of the first.
Not an easy endeavour. The first episode was watched by 22 million viewers in the USA alone - only "House of the Dragon" had higher ratings at the start. "The Last of Us" has enjoyed similar success in German-speaking countries, as Sky Deutschland confirms. In Switzerland, the series can be seen via Sky Show with Entertainment Pass.
Amazon wants to adapt "Tomb Raider"
Fans of game adaptations have even more reason to rejoice. Back last December, Amazon Games announced that it would be developing a new "Tomb Raider" game in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics - based on the Unreal Engine 5. Now sources from the "Hollywood Reporter" claim to know that Amazon is also working on a series adaptation of the game.
None other than Phoebe Waller-Bridge has reportedly been hired as the author. She has won several Golden Globes and Emmys in the British drama series "Fleabag", which is produced by Amazon. The confidence in her abilities is correspondingly high. Unlike in "Fleabag", however, Waller-Bridge is not expected to write her own role in the "Tomb Raider" series.
No information is yet known about the cast. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will also work as an executive producer in addition to writing. In addition to her success with "Fleabag", she also wrote the screenplay for the James Bond film "No Time to Die" and will play a role in the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film "The Dial of Destiny".
