Sunscreen for the scalp? Not a bad idea!

Sunscreens for the scalp and hair exist, too? Frankly, I’d never have thought to protect my hair and crown from UV damage. But after my last visit to the doctor, they're enjoying more attention from me, especially my crown.

The other day at my annual skin check, my dermatologist meticulously worked his way through my mane, searching my scalp for skin cancer. Of all things, my scalp hadn’t been anywhere near my radar. Fortunately for me, he didn’t find anything concerning. But the realisation that I was protecting my head – which is most exposed to the sun – less well than the rest of my body gave me pause.

Of course, staying in the shade and wearing a hat with UV protection would be the best solution. But doing so isn’t always possible. For example, if you want to jump into the water during your vacation on the beach. Then there’s the fact that hats aren’t very flattering on me. That’s why I only wear them when hiking (hey, maybe that’s one of the reasons why I rarely go hiking!) or on sprawling summer city trips. For everything in between, I went ahead and bought the Coola Scalp & Hair Mist.

This compact sunscreen spray protects your hair and scalp with SPF 30 and smells like a spiritual sage ritual by the sea. However, the scent fades pretty quickly. The spray is vegan, contains nourishing monoi oil and is even supposed to prevent UV-induced fading of hair colour. Thanks to the pointed spray head, you can spray the product right onto the crown of your head and massage it in with your fingers. Or you can spray it from further away onto the lengths of your hair.

One question is obvious: wouldn’t the sunscreen make your hair greasy? Although the manufacturer promises otherwise, I’m afraid I have to disappoint you. Your hairline will wind up looking a bit straggly, there’s no getting around it. That being said, you can fix the situation by spraying in some dry shampoo. Because of this, the spray is better suited to outdoor activities and not necessarily the office or your next beach wedding, where your hairdo has got to be on fleek.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
