Study shows: Losing weight doesn't have to be a "breadless art" - but it depends on the variety
Bread is not exactly known as a slimming agent. But if you want to lose weight, you don't have to give it up. According to researchers, changing the type of bread is enough.
Change your supplier? This doesn't just pay off when it comes to the topic of electricity and internet. Even if you have decided to lose weight, a change of direction could be worthwhile for you. And it shouldn't just be calorie-driven: Because in a study by the West German Diabetes and Health Centre in Düsseldorf, the influence of the proportion of carbohydrates on weight was examined - with the result that this is more relevant than calorie density.
The implementation
The three-month study involved 80 overweight test subjects between the ages of 18 and 69 who were used to eating bread every day. They were divided into two groups: One was given low-carb bread, the other common wholemeal rye bread. However, both types had roughly the same calorie density.
The result
The result was that the participants in the first group, who ate the low-carb bread, had lost between 1.8 and 2.9 kilograms of body weight and some of their waist circumference. In contrast, the wholemeal rye bread group only lost between -0.1 and -1.2 kilograms. In addition, the proportion of test subjects with severe weight loss of more than one kilogramme was twice as high in the first group as in the second. The researchers explained this result by saying that carbohydrate-rich bread favours excessive hunger.
How come
? Carbohydrates are sources of energy that provide you with sugar or glucose. When you consume carbohydrates, this causes your blood sugar level to rise rapidly. In response, your body automatically releases the hormone insulin, which transports the sugar from the blood into your cells. This in turn causes the level to drop rapidly. The rapid rise and fall in sugar levels can lead to tiredness, poor concentration and cravings. The result: you consume more calories than your body actually needs. This is noticeable on the scales.
If you want to lose weight, you should therefore opt for low-carb bread, which causes your blood sugar levels to rise and fall more evenly. This can also reduce the risk of various diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance.
"Give us this day our daily bread"
.. is therefore also a justifiable prayer in 2023. The low-carb varieties usually contain buckwheat or almond flour instead of conventional flour. These alternatives not only have a lower carbohydrate content, but also a higher protein and fibre content. The result is a longer-lasting feeling of satiety. Conclusion: not every slice is a sin.
