Cat6 cables are designed for operating frequencies of up to 250 MHz. They are used for signal transmission at high data transfer rates (1 Gbps). Due to the high signal frequencies, careful attention must be paid during installation and assembly, especially at the connection points of the wires. The individual pairs of wires in Cat6 cables are twisted at different tightness levels, which further reduces susceptibility to interference compared to Cat5e. Applications for Cat6 cables include voice and data transmission as well as multimedia and ATM networks. Even more powerful are cables according to Cat6e (500 MHz) and Cat6a (625 MHz).
